Most animals, including numerous flightless birds like ostriches, are able to move both forward and backward, although most birds have no ability to fly backward. Over 99% of bird species lack the ability to fly backward. Most birds have wing structures with strong muscles that draw them downward and weak muscles that move them upward. Most of these birds cannot fly backward without the assistance of the wind, so they rely on the wind to lift their wings. Flycatchers, warblers, egrets, and herons are among the birds that use the fluttering approach to move back a little. The hummingbird is the only bird that can fly forward and backward without relying on the wind.
