Ivan the Terrible and his Son by Ilya Repin 1883-1885
One of Ilya Repin’s most psychologically haunting pieces, “Ivan the Terrible and his Son” (oil on canvas), is a despairing picture that shows a father clutching his deceased son. It was completed in 1885. This painting showed Ivan, the victim of an overwhelming rage, cradling his dead son in his arms as he lay stunned. His son’s calm, even Christlike face contrasted sharply with Ivan’s frightened expression. The painting shows what happened after Tsar Ivan killed his son in a fit of wrath.
