The wave that shaped Japanese art and identity

The great wave travels from left to right, which could be a sign of how Western culture would change Edo Japan into a modern society. The great wave is both the highest point of Hokusai’s wave exploration and a symbol of how important Western culture was to his art. Hokusai incorporated the ideas of perspective and shade, as well as the pigment Prussian Blue, which came to define his prints, into his work through exposure to European art, especially Dutch art that had made its way into Japan.
