Because of how it reacts with light, polar bear fur looks white even though it is colourless. Because each hair shaft is transparent and hollow, it can reflect and scatter sunlight like ice. The bear’s white—or sometimes yellowish—appearance is caused by this optical phenomenon, which helps it blend in with the snowy Arctic environment. The ability to blend in makes it easier for polar bears to hunt seals, their primary prey, in the wide-open areas with minimal cover.
