The Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh 1889
One of the most well-known pieces by Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh is The Starry Night, an appealing abstract landscape painting from 1889 that depicts an intriguing night sky over a small hillside village.
A dazzling golden crescent moon, stars depicted as radiating spheres, and a night sky swirling with chromatic blue swirls dominate the oil painting on canvas. With their dark branches curving and swaying to the movement of the somewhat obscured sky, one or two cypress trees, which are frequently characterised as flame-like, tower over the foreground to the left.
During his 12-month stay at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum near Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France, Van Gogh created The Starry Night. This was several months after he had a breakdown and cut off a portion of his own ear with a razor.
