Ibex can easily climb dams as they are searching for salt. The herbivorous diet of the Ibex is deficient in salt, particularly calcium salts. Nearly all herbivorous livestock are fed salt by farmers, but animals in the wild must find salt on their own.
Ibex are frequently seen “eating” the ground in search of mineral salts released by rocks in the spring, when salt needs are at their maximum. They are also occasionally seen licking the street, drawn by anti-frosting salts.
